CT scans give a much more detailed picture than regular X-rays and can identify many conditions that may escape detection on other imaging tests.

CT is often ordered when more detail is needed based on results of other studies, when the cause of symptoms is unclear during a physical exam or when an asymptomatic patient has increased risk of certain disease. CT scans can be performed on any part of the body. Low-dose studies are used to screen for certain diseases, such as lung cancer, colon cancer, and heart disease.

For some exams, an injectable dye called contrast is administered intravenously to highlight a specific area of interest, or directly into a joint (arthrogram). Targeted body areas will absorb the contrast dye, and will glow on the CT scan, allowing for a more detailed image. There is a risk of allergic reaction to the contrast agent, so you will be asked about your allergies and other medical conditions when booking your exam. Please note that contrast is an additional cost of $125.

A coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography is a simple, non-invasive method of examining the coronary vessels that supply blood to your heart. This exam is quick and painless with very specific results. Plus, coronary CT angiography requires very little preparation and no recovery time compared to traditional angiography. Learn how coronary CT angiography compares to conventional angiography.

Coronary CT angiography can discover signs of early or significant heart disease that would be undetectable on other heart imaging tests. It detects both calcified (hard) plaque and noncalcified (soft) plaque. It is these soft plaque deposits, often invisible to standard imaging tools, that are more likely to break away and cause heart attacks or more significant health issues.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY EXAM?

After we receive your CCTA referral form, we will contact you to schedule your appointment, ask you some important questions, and provide medication and preparation instructions, such as:

  • You will need to have had an electrocardiogram (ECG) within three months of your exam. If you haven’t, your health care practitioner will need to order one prior to your appointment.
  • You will need to have a blood test to determine your kidney function within three months of your appointment.
  • Please refrain from taking erectile dysfunction medications (Viagra or Cialis) in the 48 hours prior to the procedure.
  • Avoid all caffeine products (e.g., coffee, tea, chocolate, Excedrin, decaf coffee, decaf tea) in the 24 hours before your test.
  • If prescribed, please remember to take one tablet (100 mg) of your Beta Blocker the night before your exam. You may be asked to take an additional Beta Blocker one hour before your exam.
  • Take all regular medications (except diabetes medication) the morning of your exam, with water.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise the morning of your exam.
  • No food or drink (except water) in the two hours before your exam. If you have diabetes, you can have dry toast and juice.
  • Please arrive 60 minutes before your appointment to allow enough time for adequate preparation.
  • Bring photo identification and your provincial health card.
  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • Please do not bring children who require supervision.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY EXAM?

  • You may be asked to change into scrubs.
  • A nurse will take your blood pressure and note your heart rate. If your heart rate is too high to obtain clear pictures of your coronary arteries, you will be given another Beta Blocker. It may take a few minutes for the Beta Blocker to lower your heart rate; during this time the nurse will start an intravenous (IV) line for the CT contrast solution and you will be able to relax in a quiet room.
  • For patients over 50 years of age who are receiving an IV, a creatinine blood test will be required.
  • In the scanning room, one of our technologists will position you comfortably on the scanner table and attach heart-rate monitor leads to your chest and arms to identify the precise moment for imaging – the fraction of a second between heartbeats.
  • Your technologist will leave the room to begin your exam, but you will be in direct communication throughout your procedure.
  • Your exam has four parts:
    1. Your technologist will take test images to ensure you are in the best position for the scan. We use an automatic injector that delivers contrast solution to your IV to coincide precisely with the scans.
    2. Your calcium score is taken as you are advanced into the scanner and the machine spins around your body. It measures the amount of calcium deposits surrounding your coronary arteries and provides information on your vessel locations.
    3. Prior to the test bolus scan, the nurse or your technologist will spray a little nitroglycerin under your tongue. This dilates the coronary arteries and helps produce clearer images. (You may experience a metallic taste and a warming sensation throughout your body, this is normal.) You will then be moved into the scanner where the machine will take another series of images as the contrast solution is added to your IV. These images will measure how long it takes for the solution to reach your heart vessels and gauge your exact cardiac output.
    4. The last step is the angiogram. You will be advanced into the machine for a final time and a large amount of contrast solution will be added to your IV as the scan begins.
  • At different times throughout your exam, the technologist will ask you to hold your breath for approximately 10-15 seconds while we scan your coronary arteries.

POST-EXAM INSTRUCTIONS

After your scan, we will remove your IV and a nurse will check your blood pressure and heart rate. Once these have returned to normal, you’ll be free to go.

A virtual colonoscopy is a minimally invasive computed tomography (CT) scan that produces two- and three-dimensional images of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The procedure is used to diagnose colon and bowel disease, including polyps and masses, diverticulosis (pouches in the colon), and cancer.

Please read and follow the instructions in your kit carefully. The prep kit materials are designed to cleanse your bowel for your exam; if it is not completely clean, we may have to repeat the exam. Any remaining stool may also hide serious conditions.

PREP KIT MATERIALS

  • Purg-odan (1 box, 2 pouches) – a laxative that induces bowel movements. The double dose improves the efficacy of fecal tagging (the second half of the preparation).
  • Bisacodyl (10mg x 2) rectal suppositories – a stimulant laxative which increases the activity of the bowel.
  • Buscopan (20mg – 10mg x 2) – slows the motility of the bowel, which reduces spasms during imaging. Spasms can mimic bowel disease during imaging.
  • E-Z-CAT (225ml divided into two drinks) – oral barium, a CT contrast agent that adheres to residual stool after the laxatives.
  • Oral Omnipaque 350 Solution (20ml) – a contrast agent, thinner than E-Z-CAT, which travels through the bowel quickly and adheres to residual stool already mixed with E-Z-CAT. Our computer software can then eliminate areas that are mixed with the contrast agent, differentiating between residual stool and a polyp.

TWO DAYS BEFORE THE EXAM

Around 6 p.m. After a normal evening meal, start a CLEAR FLUID DIET. This includes:

  • Water, pulp-free juices, such as apple or white grape. (AVOID red- or purple-coloured liquids.)
  • Sports drinks, such as Gatorade or Powerade.
  • Decaffeinated beverages, such as soft drinks, coffee, and tea
  • Popsicles and Jell-O (without fruit or cream).
  • Chicken broth/bullion.
  • AVOID all milk products.

Take any required medications with water. If you are diabetic, please call 403.777.3000 for further directions.

ONE DAY BEFORE THE EXAM

8 a.m. (breakfast)

Dissolve one package of Purg-odan into a glass of cold water. Drink this glass followed by an equal or larger glass of clear fluid. Drink another 4-5 glasses of clear fluid over the next hour.

The first bowel movement should occur within one hour after finishing the Purg-odan. Stay close to a washroom, as you will experience frequent bowel movements.

9 a.m.Drink 112ml of the E-Z-CAT oral barium solution.
12 p.m. (lunch)Drink an additional 112ml of the E-Z-CAT oral barium solution.
5-6 p.m. (dinner)Take the second package of Purg-odan as per the breakfast instructions, followed by 4-5 additional glasses of clear fluid over the next hour.
8 p.m.

Drink the Omnipaque (20ml) mixed with 240ml of clear fluid. Continue to drink clear fluids.

Insert one Bisacodyl rectal suppository. This should empty your bowel of any residual fluid.

12 a.m. (midnight)No fluids after midnight.

DAY OF EXAM

  • About two hours before your test, insert one Bisacodyl rectal suppository and take the Buscopan 20mg by mouth.
  • You may have sips of fluid to take the required medication.
  • Try to empty your bowels one last time before the test.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to allow enough time for adequate preparation.
  • Bring photo identification and your provincial health card.
  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • Please do not bring children who require supervision.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY EXAM?

  • You may be asked to change into scrubs.
  • You will be asked to lie on your back on the bed of the CT scanner, which will then be adjusted for correct placement.
  • A small tube will be inserted into your rectum to inflate your colon with CO2 until you feel full. (CO2 is more comfortable and more readily absorbed by the body than room air.)
  • Your technologist will leave the room to begin your exam, but you will be in direct communication throughout your procedure.
  • During the exam, you will be asked to turn from your back to your stomach.
  • You will be asked to hold your breath (for 10-15 seconds) to help obtain specific images.
  • Once we have the correct number of good-quality images, your technologist will help you off the bed and guide you back to your change room. You are then free to leave.

POST-EXAM INSTRUCTIONS

  • Resume your normal diet and medications.
  • You will be able to drive after the exam.
  • Although most of the CO2 will be absorbed, some of it will be expelled naturally over the next few hours.
  • If you have any questions or concerns following your exam, please do not hesitate to contact our office at 403-777-3000.

WHEN WILL I GET MY RESULTS?

We do our best to have our radiologists interpret the information and forward the results to your doctor in a timely manner. Please consult with your doctor regarding your results and any follow up exams or questions.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

In Calgary, CT exams are provided at our Mayfair Place location as private pay exams and are not covered by Alberta Health Care. A virtual colonoscopy is $930. We offer a 10% Seniors discount (65+) that can be applied to the total CT exam.

Your health spending account or group medical insurance plan may cover the cost of a private CT that is prescribed by a qualified health care practitioner. You will need to check with your plan administrator for coverage details.

Please note that if contrast is needed, it’s an additional cost.

PLEASE NOTE:

Please bring the following to your appointment: a valid government-issued ID, your provincial health card, and your exam requisition (if you have received one).

Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging system that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce comprehensive images of your abdomen. CT scans give a much more detailed picture than regular X-rays and can identify many conditions that may escape detection on other imaging tests.

Your health care practitioner may order an abdomen CT scan to examine one of the following (or, for a more comprehensive exam, a combined abdomen/pelvis CT):

  • A cause of pain or swelling.
  • Lymph nodes or blood vessels.
  • The kidneys or bladder.
  • The liver, pancreas, or spleen.
  • The small or large bowel.

Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging system that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce comprehensive images of your heart. This exam is designed to measure the amount of calcified (hard) plaque in the small arteries that supply the heart. This “calcium score” is extensively studied and can be used to help determine your specific risk for a future heart attack.

Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging system that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce comprehensive images of specific areas of your lungs. CT scans give a much more detailed picture than regular X-rays and can identify many conditions that may escape detection on other imaging tests.

Your health care practitioner may order a lung CT scan to look for:

  • Blocked blood flow in the lung (pulmonary embolism).
  • Lung cancer.
  • Other lung problems.
  • Signs of infection.

Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging system that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce comprehensive images of your pelvis. Computed tomography (CT) is an advanced imaging system that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce comprehensive images of specific areas of your body, including your bones, chest, head, joints, lungs, and spine. CT scans give a much more detailed picture than regular X-rays and can identify many conditions that may escape detection on other imaging tests.

For some exams, an injectable dye called contrast is administered intravenously to highlight a specific area of interest, or directly into a joint (arthrogram). Targeted body areas will absorb the contrast dye, and will highlight on the CT scan, allowing for a more detailed image of structures of the joint. Such as ligaments and cartilage.

CT enterography is an imaging test that uses CT imagery and a contrast material to view the small intestine. The procedure allows your healthcare provider to determine what is causing your condition. He or she can also tell how well you’re responding to treatment for a health issue, such as Crohn’s disease.

Computed tomography (CT) vascular angiography is a simple, non-invasive method of examining your blood vessels. This exam is quick and painless with very specific results. It may help discover signs of early or significant vascular or artery disease.

It is these soft plaque deposits, often invisible to standard imaging tools, that are more likely to break away and cause heart attacks or more significant health issues.

asthma, heart disease, kidney problems, or thyroid conditions also increase your risk of a reaction to contrast.
