MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)

An MRI is a safe and painless test that uses a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body. It helps doctors look closely at areas like your brain, spine, bones, abdomen, and soft tissues to check for any signs of illness or injury. At Mayfair, we offer both 1.5T and 3T MRI scans at our Mayfair Place location in Calgary and 1.5T at our Saskatoon and Regina clinics.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful tool for screening and diagnosis. Many consider it to be the best way to detect diseases in their earliest, most treatable stage.

The exam is non-invasive, uses no radiation, and our state-of-the-art equipment offers a more comfortable imaging experience. Your health care practitioner may order an abdomen MRI to investigate any concerns in your abdominal area, or to examine:

  • Blood flow or blood vessels
  • Liver, pancreas, and kidneys
  • Lymph nodes
  • The cause of pain or swelling

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY EXAM?

  • SASKATCHEWAN PATIENTS: Please call the clinic directly if you need to reschedule (Regina: 1-306-569-9729 ext. 3; Saskatoon: 1-306-664-8600).
  • Please let us know if you are, or may be, pregnant, or if you’ve had recent surgery.
  • Please also inform us if you have metal in your body.  Your technologist may ask you to remove any metallic objects, which are unsafe near the MRI magnet.
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed.
  • No food or drink for four hours before your exam.
  • Wear comfortable clothes free of metal zippers or buttons, including metal-free underwear.
  • Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to allow enough time to check in with reception.
  • In Regina, if an X-ray is required, you will need to arrive 45 minutes before your appointment, unless it’s a 7 or 7:30 am appointment. If your MRI is scheduled outside of X-ray hours, you will need to come during X-ray hours.
  • Bring photo identification and your provincial health card.
  • Children may have parents in the exam room with them.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY EXAM?

  • You may be asked to change into a gown or scrubs.
  • If a contrast solution is needed, we will insert an intravenous (IV) line.
  • Once the IV is in place your technologist will position you on the cushioned scanner table in the MRI suite. We will do our best to make you comfortable.
  • An MRI can be loud, so you will be provided with headphones or ear plugs to reduce the noise. Eye masks are available upon request for patients who have difficulty relaxing in a confined space. You are also given an emergency call bell to stop the exam, if needed.
  • Once you are relaxed and comfortable, a sensor will be positioned around the body part being scanned. The table will then move slowly into the MRI scanner, which is well lit and ventilated.
  • You will be asked to hold very still, as movement may result in blurring of images. Your technologist will be close by at all times.
  • You may be asked to hold your breath for some of the images. Breath holds can last between 5-25 seconds.
  • Once we have successfully captured your images, your IV will be removed (if you have one) and you are free to leave.

A body composition profile using magnetic resonance imaging (BCP MRI) uses a powerful magnetic and radiofrequency waves and an artificial intelligence and bioinformatics platform from AMRA® to measure the percentage of fat, bone, and muscle in your body. This can tell you what percentage of your body weight is fat and help indicate how healthy you are.

Finding your individual body composition profile is important because your fat to muscle ratio can be different from someone who is the same height, weight, and age as you. Your scale can only tell you your weight, not how much fat and muscle mass you have. Similarly, body mass index (BMI) only tells you the ratio of your weight to your height; it doesn’t measure body fat.

Without the use of radiation, BCP provides an individualized description of a person’s body composition based on a rapid, non-invasive MRI scan. This allows for a greater understanding of your body and the ability to personalize clinical care. It provides a greater depth of information than BMI, allowing a detailed look at your tissue.

Once your images have been gathered, they will be sent to AMRA® for analysis. Once data processing with AMRA® is complete, it is verified by a Mayfair radiologist who will also review all acquired imaging and generate a report that will be sent to your referring doctor within five business days.

This report will provide patient-specific body composition profile measurements and comparisons to reference data ranges, giving context to the results. Each measurement is visualized in a bar plot, where each patient’s information is presented in relation to the distribution within a body-size and sex-specific reference population.

Your doctor will review your images and the report from the radiologist and discuss any next steps with you. Please consult with your doctor regarding your results and any follow up exams or questions.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

This exam is only available in Alberta. BCP MRI exams are provided at our Mayfair Place location as private pay exams and are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Prices are per scan. For the first or a single scan, BCP MRI is $980. For follow-up scan, it’s $850 per scan up to a maximum of four scans total. Pricing for body composition profile follow-up scans applies only if additional scans are booked at the same time as the first scan. All scans must be completed within 12 months of the first scan.

We also offer a 10% Seniors discount (65+) that can be applied to the first MRI exam.

  • Its high resolution aids in detecting subtle injuries in ligaments and bones, which is valuable in sports medicine.
  • It can perform arthrograms (an MRI of a joint after injecting a contrast medium).

The exam is non-invasive, uses no radiation, and our state-of-the-art equipment offers a more comfortable imaging experience. It is often ordered when more detail is needed based on results of other studies, when the cause of symptoms is unclear during a physical exam, or when an asymptomatic patient has increased risk of certain disease.

For an arthrogram an injectable dye called contrast is administered directly into a joint. The joint will absorb the contrast dye and glow on the MRI scan, allowing for a more detailed image. There is a risk of allergic reaction to the contrast agent, so you will be asked about your allergies and other medical conditions when booking your exam.

Your health care practitioner may order MRI enterography scan to examine your abdomen, focusing on the small bowel.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR MY EXAM?

  • Please let us know if you are, or may be, pregnant, or if you’ve had recent surgery.
  • Please also inform us if you have metal in your body. our technologist may ask you to remove any metallic objects, which are unsafe near the MRI magnet.
  • Take all prescribed medications as directed.
  • If you are having oral contrast, please do not eat or drink (except water) after midnight prior to your appointment.
  • Please arrive 70 minutes before your appointment to allow enough time to start an intravenous line and for the oral contrast (Lactulose) to take effect.
  • Bring photo identification and your provincial health card.
  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • Please do not bring children who require supervision.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY EXAM?

  • You may be asked to change into scrubs.
  • You will be asked to drink roughly one 500 ml bottle of water mixed with 40 ml of Lactulose (an oral contrast solution that helps enhance your images) every 20 minutes over the next 60 minutes.
  • After 60 minutes you will be taken to the MRI scanner and asked to lie on your back on the cushioned scanner table, which will then be adjusted for correct placement.
  • Your technologist will then set up an intravenous (IV) line for the contrast solution.
  • Once you are relaxed and comfortable, a sensor will be positioned around the body part being scanned. The table will then move slowly into the MRI scanner, which is well lit and ventilated.
  • Your technologist will leave the room to begin your exam, but you will be in direct communication throughout your procedure.
  • Your technologist will take several initial scans, then administer the contrast solution through your IV to enhance your remaining images.
  • You will be asked to hold very still, as movement may result in blurring of images. Your technologist will be close by at all times.
  • You may be asked to hold your breath for some of the images. Breath holds can last between 5-25 seconds.
  • Once we have successfully captured your images, we will remove your IV and you are free to leave.

POST-EXAM INSTRUCTIONS

It is important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to “flush out” the contrast solution. Most of the solution is out of your system within the six hours following your exam and will be completely eliminated within 24 hours.

The exam is non-invasive, uses no radiation, and our state-of-the-art equipment offers a more comfortable imaging experience. It is often ordered when more detail is needed based on results of other studies, when the cause of symptoms is unclear during a physical exam or when an asymptomatic patient has increased risk of certain disease.

It’s invaluable for an MRI assessment of the prostate, which provides detailed images of the prostate and surrounding tissues. It’s used in combination with proper clinical assessment and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. It can be very helpful in determining the management of prostate-related disease.

For this exam, an injectable dye called contrast is often administered intravenously to highlight the prostate. The prostate absorbs the contrast dye, and will glow on the MRI scan, allowing for a more detailed image. There is a risk of allergic reaction to the contrast agent, so you will be asked about your allergies and other medical conditions when booking your exam.

This non-invasive, multi-dimensional screening view of the body using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to evaluate possible conditions before they become a concern, allowing you to better manage your health. State-of-the-art whole body imaging may lead to early diagnosis, allowing you to achieve peace of mind and better manage your health.

Whole body imaging (WBI) takes approximately one hour and evaluates:

  • The brain, including its major blood vessels.
  • The spine and spinal cord.
  • The major organs of the body, including the salivary and thyroid glands, lymphatic system, liver, gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, kidneys, bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate and testes.
  • The lungs and bowel are not optimally assessed with MRI but supplemental low-dose CT of the lungs and colon can be obtained as an add-on.
  • Dedicated evaluation of the major joints of the body is also available as an add-on.

Whole body imaging has the ability to detect hundreds of different conditions including many types of early-stage cancer, multiple sclerosis, brain aneurysms, narrowing of the arteries, ischemic injury, vascular malformations, various metabolic disorders, disc herniations, endometriosis, neurodegenerative disorders and spinal degeneration.

Mayfair whole body scans will be interpreted and reported by sub-specialty-trained radiologists with extensive oncologic-imaging interpretation experience.

Once your images have been gathered, they will be reviewed by a Mayfair radiologist who will generate a report that will be sent to your referring doctor within five business days. Your doctor will review your images and the report from the radiologist and discuss any next steps with you. Please consult with your doctor regarding your results and any follow up exams or questions.

PLEASE NOTE: Whole body imaging supplements but is not intended to replace other established evidence-based screening practices for the early detection of specific malignancies (e.g., breast imaging, colonoscopy, Pap-smear screening for cervical cancer, low-dose chest CT). As with any medical exam or test, whole body imaging is not guaranteed to detect all malignancies and diseases.

Learn more about BCP MRI.
